You might not want to admit it to yourself, but you think there could be a rodent in your house. What you definitely don’t want to do is ignore the possibility completely or begin to panic. These two extreme reactions won’t help you get to the bottom of the matter and solve the problem, if indeed there is one. By remaining vigilant and keeping an eye out for strong indicators of rodent activity in your home, you should be able to figure out fairly quickly whether you need to take action. Here are some of the most common things you should be ready for:
Sounds
One of the first things you might notice are odd noises coming from odd places. There might be some scratching, scuttling, and squeaking if you have some smaller rodents like mice, or even grinding and scampering for larger ones like squirrels. Typically, you would hear noises like these more frequently during the night.
Sights
Obviously, if you catch sight of one of the critters darting across your attic or kitchen, you know you have a rodent problem. Even if you don’t, you can still notice indicators of rodent activity like bite marks on walls and furniture, small pellet-shaped droppings, or even grease marks smeared on the bottom of walls.
Smells
Finally, there will definitely be distinctive smells if rodents have been living in your house for an extended period. The most powerful of these will likely be a urine-like smell. If there are a significant number of rats in your attic for a few weeks, you can bet that the urine will pool and seep into parts of the ceiling, walls, and insulation. Hopefully, you can catch them before it gets to this.
If you notice any of these signs repeatedly, then it is highly likely that you have at least one rodent living in your home. But, especially with mice and rats, there are relatively few cases where there is only one of the critters that have made it inside.
