How to Identify Poisonous Spiders in Florida

How to Identify Poisonous Spiders in FloridaFlorida has an abundance of spiders, and most people hate them. However, we only need to be wary of five types of poisonous spiders in the Sunshine State: the brown recluse and four variations of the widow spider. Here are some identifying characteristics you should be aware of to help you identify whether the spider you come across is one of the poisonous five.

The Brown Recluse

Brown recluse spiders have a violin-shaped, dark brown mark on their upper body. They are typically between 1 to 1 ½ inches long. Their lower body may be dark brown, tan, yellow, or green. The bite of a brown recluse spider is poisonous and should be treated with medical attention. If you come across one, there are likely more living nearby. If you find one in your home, they are known to live in dark corners, under furniture and in boxes and books.

The Widow Spiders

Females widow spiders are infamously known for killing their mates, but are they a danger to humans? The answer is yes. A widow’s venom can severely harm humans, and any bites should be treated by a medical professional as quickly as possible. Although there have been very few reported deaths related to a widow spider bite, they can still cause significant pain and discomfort and could become more dangerous if left untreated. While the black widow is the most well-known widow spider, there are four other types of the species living in Florida.

  • The Southern Black Widow

Of the four found in Florida, the southern black widow poses the most threat to humans. They are identifiable by a solid red hourglass on the abdomen of their all-black body. They are slightly larger than the northern black widow, ranging from about 1.5 to 2 inches long.

  • The Northern Black Widow

An all-black body and legs with bright red markings on the back are traits of the northern black widow. The toxin released from a bite affects the central nervous system, and pain can be felt almost immediately. In severe cases, large muscles become rigid with spasms, and there is a rise in body temperature and blood pressure.

  • The Red Widow

Long red legs and a red thorax and head are identifying qualities on the red widow spider. The bite of a red widow is similar to the black widow, and you should treat it as just as dangerous. They are common in southern states and are drawn to sand.

  • The Brown Widow

The brown widow spider has a very different look to the others. They are small and only get to around a 1/2 inch in size. These spiders are all brown with an orange hourglass-shaped mark on the abdomen. The bite of a brown widow is not as dangerous as the black and red widow bites. You should wash with soap and water and keep a close eye on the wound if you believe a brown widow has bitten you.
